On June 24 at noon, you're invited to join TL Insider and RBC InvestEase® as we examine the ins and outs of living and working as an artist in the City of Toronto, and some of the different ways cultural sector workers can build financial wellness and resilience during the pandemic. Leading this compelling conversation will be Izzy Ritchie from Canadian rock band The Strumbellas, Tawiah BenEben Mfoafo-M'Carthy, Ghanaian-born, Toronto-based theatre artist, Nadia Lloyd, artist and designer, and Rajan Bansi, Head of RBC InvestEase.
Izzy Ritchie is an award-winning violinist, songwriter, and member of The Strumbellas. In 2016, The Strumbellas hit song Spirits topped charts around the world including Italy, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Since then, Izzy has performed at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Osheaga and appeared on late shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Izzy is an active member of the Canadian music industry, collaborating often with other artists, acting as a judge for the JUNO awards, and engaging in additional music projects across genres including children’s music, pop, and roots.
Tawiah Mfoafo-M'Carthy is a Ghanaian-born, Toronto-based theatre artist and professional, notable as a Dora nominated performer and playwright. In his action as an artist, Tawiah strives to create works and characters that contribute new narratives to the stage, works that reflect the truths of society as it was, is, and could be. His playwright/creator/performer credits include Maanoma, My Brother (Blue Bird Theatre Collective), Black Boys (Saga Collectif), Obaaberima (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre), and The Kente Cloth (Summer Works). He was recently featured as a playwright (Yɛn Ara Asaase Ni) in 21 Black Futures by Obsidian Theatre on CBC Gem. In his action as a theatre professional, Tawiah aims to create opportunities for young and emerging artists to become the administrators of their own artistic practices.
Nadia Lloyd is a Toronto artist, designer, and event planner best known more recently for designing face masks worn by Toronto Mayor John Tory as well her Black Lives Matter mask, designed in May 2020, worn by the Toronto Raptors. Once the pandemic hit, she realized that she had a lot of her art printed fabric that she could repurpose on face masks, along with sewing skills that she learned at a young age. Her mission is now to focus on designs with messages that encourage people to have conversations on important topics, such as Stop Asian Hate, Every Child Matters, and more. She uses proceeds of her sales to raise money for various charities and to date, has raised over $22,000.
Rajan Bansi is Head of RBC InvestEase, RBC’s robo-advisor, which has a mission to bring smart investing to a new generation of investors. Rajan is a CFA charterholder who obtained his MBA from Pepperdine University and an undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Toronto. An active member of the community, Rajan currently serves on the board of the Toronto Public Library Foundation, Luminato, and the organizing committee of the Writers Trust Gala.
