On Thursday, September 30, you're invited to a very special virtual Fireside Chat with Bilal Baig, co-creator, co-executive producer, co-writer and lead performer of the new CBC original comedy-drama Sort Of, for a discussion on Bilal’s incredible personal and artistic journey, and the making of their highly anticipated series Sort Of, which premieres and will be available to stream in Canada beginning Tuesday, October 5 on CBC Gem — CBC's streaming service. This Fireside Chat will be hosted by Amil Niazi, a panelist on CBC's Pop Chat.
Bilal Baig - EP/Writer/Lead Performer/Co-Creator Bilal Baig (they/them) is a queer, trans-feminine, Muslim playwright, performer and workshop facilitator. Bilal's first play, Acha Bacha, had its world premiere in 2018 and has been published by Playwrights Canada Press. Other written work in development includes Kainchee Lagaa, Kitne Saare Laloo Yahan Pey Hain, and I want that free mind! Bilal is a core team member at non-profits such as Story Planet and Rivers of Hope, where they develop and facilitate workshops for youth in under-resourced neighbourhoods in Toronto focused on creative writing and literacy (Story Planet), and combatting Islamophobia through the arts (Rivers of Hope).
Amil Niazi is a cultural critic and writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, The Cut, The Guardian and Macleans. She is also a panelist on the weekly CBC pop culture podcast, Pop Chat.
